BF Goodrich Aerospace, located in Pueblo, Colo., manufactures carbon disc brakes for commercial, business and military aircraft worldwide. A vacuum steam system that provides vacuum for high temperature furnaces (intermediate stage chillers) is a key part of its brake manufacturing process. Heat exchanger tube bundles from this system routinely become fouled with a crusty tar substance that causes a loss of efficiency. 

In the past, tube bundles were cleaned with Methylene chloride, a highly effective but very toxic cleaning chemical. The tube bundles are now cleaned by immersion in full-strength Bio T Max. "We tested a number of alternative solvents, but chose Max for several reasons: it was the most effective non-chlorinated cleaner we tested, it had the best price, and BioChem Systems provided the most complete MSDS information and superior technical support," said Richardson. "The BioChem representative was in our facility to assist with the transition. He had detailed knowledge of pump systems, compatible materials for seals and tanks, and he provided input on tank design and fire and safety concerns."

Boeing-Wichita has chosen Bio T Max to replace a popular commercial cleaner that was used in its machine shop for general cleanup applications. Bio T Max was selected because of its neutral pH which eliminates the possibility of corrosion if overspray happens to reach a production part. Max cleans effectively without harming aluminum, mild steel, stainless steel, titanium and other metals.

Boeing installed a Bio T Max blend center right in its tool crib. The blend center automatically blends and fills 32-ounce spray bottles with Max at a 10 percent concentration. Each employee has a spray bottle at his workstation to clean grease, oil, lubricant and cutting fluid from benches, milling machines, tools and the shop floor.

Blending Max to a 10 percent dilution has also proven extremely economical. Boeing has achieved a significant cost savings compared to the pre-packaged commercial cleaner it was using.

The Puerto Rico Power Authority turned to Bio T Max for cleaning the concrete floors in bunkers where pump and filter systems that lubricate plant turbine bearings are located. "Bunker C" always proved difficult to clean and strict controls by the Environmental Quality Board required a biodegradable, non-hazardous chemical solution.

According to a Puerto Rico Power Authority area supervisor, many products were tested, but none produced the results of Bio T Max. And, because of its dilution capability and resulting cost-effectiveness, the burner and transformer areas of the plant have also begun using the product.

According to BioChem research and development chemist Sean Sears, Bio T Max is highly effective in removing heavy oil from concrete floors. Because it’s water-soluble and easily rinses off concrete and tools, it significantly reduces cleanup time.
